Fort Pierre was born
as a trading post where fur and buffalo robes
were exchanged for guns, tobacco, salt, beads
and other goods. The city of Pierre grew up
where passengers and freight congregated to
cross the Missouri River. Its first commercial
establishments — a drug store, grocery, clothing
store, lumber yard and several saloons –
established the tradition of providing to both
resident and traveler the things that make
prairie life pleasant and comfortable. |
